The 96th Women's Amateur Championship was hosted by Indian Creek Country Club in Indian Creek Village, where the best players in the state would compete in two rounds of stroke play before match play determined the winner.
The Women's Amateur is one of the longest standing women's tournaments in the state, and there was certainly no absence of history at this year's competition. Continue reading to find out how the competition took place!
A total of 82 players competed in this year's Women's Amateur Championship. Alongside the 55 exempt players in the championship, 27 players qualified at two different sites. During the tournament, all players would compete in two rounds of stroke play before the field would be cut to the top 32 players.
Round one was complete with only three players under par: Siuue Wu lead the field at 2-under while Leah Gram and Sophia Dyer followed closely at 1-under.
During the second round, many players made significant changes to their position in an effort to make the cut. Remi Bacardi carded a 3-under round of 69 to secure her spot as the No. 2 seed, while Siuue Wu continued her consistent play with her own score of 69 to earn medalist honors.
Despite the intense competition of stroke play, players still had time for a little fun. While making the turn, players were seen signing autographs for some lucky fans.
The round of 32 was highlighted by the top two players, Siuue Wu and Remi Bacardi, who both won their matches against Leah Gram and McKenna Murphy respectively.
In the round of 16, Siuue Wu completed a stellar comeback against Caroline Patterson, erasing a 3 hole deficit to win the match 2 & 1. Alexandra Gazzoli put together a dominant performance over Sara Vitasek, winning 5 & 4 while never losing a hole. Defending champion Sophia Dyer went the distance with Yaxuan Zheng, with Dyer sinking an 8-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole for victory.
All four quarterfinal matches took 18 holes to complete, which was a testament to the intense competition of Saturday. Siuue Wu and Remi Bacardi advanced by winning the final hole.
Only four players made it to the final day of play on Sunday: Remi Bacardi, Alexandra Gazzoli, Siuue Wu, and Ana Boone.
Siuue Wu advanced to the championship match by winning back-to-back holes on 15 and 16, which would end Boone's run at the championship. Remi Bacardi headed to the 17th hole with a 2 up lead over Gazzoli, where she made a comfortable par to win the match 2 & 1 and advance to the final.
In subtle foreshadowing, the top two players from stroke play met at the end of the road.
In a championship match between Florida Gator Siuue Wu and future Virginia Cavalier Remi Bacardi, the Gator came out on top. Bacardi would open strong with a birdie on the first hole, but heading to the back nine, the match was all square, which provided for an exciting back nine.
On Indian Creek's 12th hole, one of the most difficult on the course, Wu stayed steady and made par while Bacardi found trouble over the green. Wu then followed up with a birdie on 13, giving her a 2 up advantage. From there, Wu was in the driver's seat, where she made 4 straight pars to finish off Bacardi 2 & 1 on the 17th hole.
With the victory, Wu earned her place in Florida golf history while also punching her ticket to the U.S Women's Amateur at Bandon Dunes.
