The top amateurs from around the state will make their way to Streamsong Resort to battle it out for the 93rd Women's Amateur title in June. Streamsong is no stranger to hosting state and national championships, having previously hosted eight FSGA championships.
The average age of this year’s Women’s Amateur field was 21.9 years old. Honorine Nobuta Ferry was the youngest competitor in the field at 12 years old, while four-time Women’s Amateur champion Taffy Brower was the most experienced player in the field at 78 years old.
Thirty-nine colleges were represented at this year’s championship, with 72 junior golfers in the field.
After a long week of golf, Maisie Filler and Bailey Shoemaker faced off in the final match for the Women's Amateur title.
After 130 holes of golf, it was Shoemaker who raised the Women’s Amateur trophy at the end of the day. Shoemaker defeated Filler, 3 and 2, at Streamsong to win the 93rd Women’s Amateur Championship.
Shoemaker becomes the first junior golfer to win the Women’s Amateur championship in the championship’s 93-year history.
Qualifying began with over over 1,000 players hoping to earn a spot in the championship. In the end, 127 players punched their ticket, joining 41 exempt competitors at The Bear's Club in June for the 105th Amateur Championship.
This year’s field consists of 12 players inside the top 1000 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, along with six past champions. A total of 46 collegiate golfers competed in this year’s Amateur Championship, with six of the last seven amateur champions having been collegiate players.
Alex Vogelsong rolled in a must-make birdie putt after hitting it in the greenside bunker on the 72nd hole of the championship, to force a playoff with Reid Bedell for the title.
Left with a nearly identical shot from the greenside bunker, Vogelsong hit it to 6 feet on the first playoff hole and made birdie, while Bedell finished with par, to capture the victory at the 105th Amateur Championship.
It was Brianna Castaldi and Remi Bacardi who were victorious at the 63rd Girls’ Junior Amateur Championship at The Country Club of Winter Haven.
This is the second FSGA championship victory for Castaldi, who captured the 12 & Under victory at the Girls’ Junior Championship in 2017. Bacardi picked up her first FSGA championship victory with a final-round 66.
Wyatt Plattner and Shawn Coultoff came out on top at the 68th Boys’ Junior Amateur Championship at Seminole Legacy Golf Club. Plattner fired rounds of 68-68-69 to win his first FSGA championship. He carded a 12-under 204 to secure the seven-shot victory in the 16-18 division.
Coultoff went wire-to-wire to capture his second FSGA championship. He captured the six-shot Boys’ Junior win in the 13-15 division at 12-under 204, including a second-round 65.
Coral Creek Club played host to the Women's Amateur Stroke Play Championship in July. The course offered an array of challenges from the rough, to the greens, proving an excellent test to crown a champion.
After starting the final round six shots off the lead, Elle Johnson fired a final-round 65 to capture the three-shot victory. Her 6-under 65 set the women's course record at Coral Creek Club.
The 76th Florida Open Championship took center stage at Bradenton Country Club in July, with professionals competing for a $100,000 purse. A record-breaking 12,000 competitors signed up with hopes to bring home the trophy.
Four-hundred and nineteen of the states’ best professionals entered to play, but only 100 of them secured a spot in the field. Meanwhile on the amateur side, 863 amateurs entered the tournament, with only 56 of them playing in the field.
Andy Pope made the most of moving day during the second round of the Florida Open, firing a 9-under 63 to take the 36-hole lead.
It had been almost a year since Andy Pope teed it up in a professional event, but he ended the week raising the trophy at the Florida Open Championship taking home the $15,000 first-place check.
Pope secured the three-shot victory with a 15-under 199 for the championship with rounds of 68-63-68. This was the first professional win for Pope since 2013.
Sixty-four of the top amateurs headed to Hobe Sound Golf Club for the 30th Amateur Match Play Championship at the end of July.
The 64 competitors played three matches in group play on Thursday and Friday. The 16 group winners advanced to the Round of 16 on Saturday, with single elimination match play to determine the champion.
It was John Houchin who was left standing after four long days of golf at the 30th Amateur Match Play Championship at Hobe Sound Golf Club. Houchin defeated Joey Latowski, 5 and 4, in the Finals to take home the victory.
The Florida Women's Open & Senior Open Championship, the last major of the year, headed to Heritage Oaks Golf & Country Club in August.
It was Mariel Galdiano and Jackie Gallagher-Smith who raised the trophies at the Florida Women’s Open and Senior Open Championship at Heritage Oaks Golf & Country Club. Both professionals, Galdiano and Gallagher-Smith, took home the first place checks of $7,600 and $4,800, respectively.
